After being treated with extreme disrespect by both Hyundai corporate, and my local dealership, along with my car still not being fixed, I think I am going to try and trade my 2014 Elantra in for a used Subaru Outback. The one pictured above is a 2012 2.5i Premium with about 22,000 miles. My grandfather is friends, and neighbors with the general manager at the Toyota dealership which is trying to sell it, so he thinks that I could get a good deal. What do y'all think.
(I'm fine with a CVT transmission, eventually I want to own a manual, but now isn't the right time.)
Also, I'm 6'9" so I do not fit in the prior gen Outback.

as someone mentioned on here before: its an expensive way to get a slow, thirsty car with a CVT
the more recent gens of outbacks have left a lot to be desired in all departments.

I'm fine with it not being the fastest, or the best on gas. Right now, I need something roomy, with good reliability.

why not an accord? it roomy. its not that quickest. but its much better on fuel and reliability....do you even need to ask?
plus head gaskets on the 2.5 not sure if it was fixxed on this.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 14:28 |

I don't fit in the Accord.

With the drivers seat all the way back, my knees touch the dashboard.

I'm pretty sure the head gaskets were a late 90's, early 2000's problem.

got it./ I just hear subaru 2.5 and start saying head gaskets.

If you can get a good deal, I say go for it.
Though personally, I'd go for a Forester. Better looking IMO.

dam you tall.
newer ford escape? my dad had a rental (fully loaded titainum) with the 2.0L ecoboost.
TONNES of head+leg room, it seemed fairly well screwed together and it goit reasonable MPGs and could boogie if you stuck your foot in it.
the 1.6 is slower, but also more economical.

I like the foresters looks better too. My only issue is that I'd have to get a base forester (o power seats or lumbar support available) , because the mid grade and top grade models have moon roofs, which means that I do not fit in them. Whereas with the Outback I can get a mid grade model (with power seats) and without a moonroof.

my housemate just bought a green 2012 limited(comes with a great H&K stereo I guess) with tan leather to replace his borked TDI passat. He likes it, enough shove to get up the short steep hills around here which the CVT actually helps with. I drove it for like 60 seconds, and its comfy enough I don't think its a step down from an Elantra....34mpg highway during a cross country trip but do not expect anything from it if you're at considerable elevation. Their destination was the Colorado rockies and when they got there it was nothing but a high rpm struggle to keep up with the rest of traffic once in the mtns.

Drove one. It was pretty tight. I'm still growing, so it probably wouldn't be a great idea.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 14:36 |

Ooh, I see. Then yeah, the Outback is good.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 14:37 |

Thanks. I actually don't mind the outback having less features than my elantra,as it is probably going to be a more reliable car. Has your roommate had any issues with his outback so far?
![]() 11/16/2014 at 14:38 |

I just hope my grandpa's friend could work a decent deal, with minimal extra money involved.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 14:41 |

6'9" and still growing? shit.
jeeps?
i'm more or less trying to avoid this car. It relys too much on its predessors fame and glory whilst not being such a great car on its own.
wild card choice: smart car. they are actually more roomy (for the front 2 ppl) then the caddilac escalade of the same years. plus rear engine, RWD.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 14:44 |

The only jeep I can fit in is the current gen grand cherokee, but to get one in my budget, it is going to have really high miles. I barely can fit in a smart car, and I do not fit in the Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade. Thanks for the ideas though.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 14:45 |

ahhh, shit.
I guess this is it then :S
what about an older forester?
![]() 11/16/2014 at 14:46 |
|
Go for it. We have an Impreza of the same year with the CVT. Aside from the CVT liking to go over 4k rpm its not bad for normal driving. Not too familiar with the 2.5 as we have the 2.0. They're good, capable cars. Plus AWD is a plus if you live where there's a real winter.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 14:48 |

I only fit in the 2014-2015 Base model forester with no moonroof. I have a bad back due to a car accident last year, so I really need lumbar support. Unfortunately, the power seat only comes on the Premium, Limited, and Touring models which all have moon roofs, which means that my head is touching the ceiling.
Car shopping when tall is quite a difficult task.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 14:50 |

Thanks. We don't really get major winters in NC, but when it snows, there is usually ice, so AWD is a big plus for that.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 14:50 |
|
hmm.
there is also another option...
buy any car you want...and MAKE it fit. get a shop to remount the seats further back/lower
It may not be the choice you want to make right now...but it would open up a lot more cars for consideration.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 14:52 |

Thats an interesting idea. I do appreciate all of the suggestions.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 14:54 |

Half joking. Have you tried the Buick that shaq or whoever drives in the commercial?
I have no experience with newer Subarus. And as a person at 5'6" my usual concern is being able to see/reach things properly without being right on top of the steering wheel.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 14:55 |

I seriously have no clue how Shaq fit in the Lacrosse without modifications. I've tried one, and It wasn't very roomy.

any time.

Interesting. Google tells me he's 7'1". I love my Mazda3 but I have a feeling you wouldn't fit. One of my employees has a CX5 that she loves. It's based on the 6 so it should have more room.
With all that said if you can get a good deal on the Subaru I'd go that route if you could make it work financially.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 15:13 |

I can comfortably drive anything in Mazda's current lineup. (I've not looked at the cx-9, but the crash test terrifies me.)

Nopers and with their Jeep cherokee's dash gauges/ecu random failings its become the fulltime winter commuter. But not one problem since they drove it from upstate NY to CO & back a few weeks ago and the heated seats work great
![]() 11/16/2014 at 15:24 |

You had me curious with that comment so I went to YouTube. That small overlap for the CX-9 is awful. I watched for my 3 to compare poor (CX-9) to good (my 3) and I feel much safer. I wish they did the small overlap for my old corolla just to compare too.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 15:29 |

Yeah, its pretty terrifying. This is pretty close to your corolla.

Awesome. Thanks then.

My wife's grandparents have a 2012 Outback. It's literally one of the nicest riding vehicles I've ever driven or taken a ride in. Absolutely not exciting to drive but honestly that's a great compliment. I have a 2000 Outback which also rides nice and I love driving because it's just so damn relaxing. The newer models are just on a different plane all together.
Also, 22-29mpg for a car of this size that has full time AWD is pretty amazing. Only Minivans and full-size 7-passenger SUV's can compete with the Outback's roominess when considering fuel economy. That's actually still mostly true with my 2000 Outback which is a good bit smaller than the 2012. We also own a Honda Pilot and often take the 00 outback on long trips as it's just more comfortable, can fit all of our stuff and is better on Gas...that's the OLD 4 speed automatic, we get 18-25mpg.
For what it's worth, we/they live in NC as well. Despite the lack of snow it's still a perfect car for the area.

Thats really good to hear then. I do enjoy a comfortable ride. Thanks so much for the input. I'm looking forward to looking at this one tomorrow.

Good god. I raise you a honda pilot

Two things that made me laugh a little. The horn blaring after and the gas cap door flying off.

Big vehicles are so much safer..... Not

Its terrifying that the Pilot is the car I learned to drive in. At least the Outback did good in the crash test.

I like the slow mo inside the car when the front airbag deploys. It leaves a near perfect impression of the face
![]() 11/16/2014 at 17:09 |

Wow, I didn't notice that. I guess it shows how the airbag did its job.

You might think I'm hallucinating but try a Beetle. I have one, am 6', and with the seat all the way back I cannot even touch the pedals. At all. A 6'6" friend had one and drove it without the seat at max travel. I'm talking about the first generation New Beetle; not sure about the current version.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 17:17 |
|
I'll maybe have to see. I know that most of the current VW's have really narrow seats which do not fit my frame well. If the Outback doesn't seem good, then maybe I'd check a beetle out.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 17:19 |
|
The Sport seats ARE narrow; the 'regular' seats not so much...
![]() 11/16/2014 at 18:34 |

They've fixed that issue a million years ago.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 18:38 |

If you can get it go for the 2015 Outback. Much more standard features, much better interior, more fuel efficient, much better CVT, and it's pretty good looking. Did I mention the interior?
Previous generations are dogs on the inside. The new ones are a lot easier on the eyes and the standard infotainment center rivals Chrysler's UConnect, which I still think is one of the best if not the best out there.
I had one as a loaner. They're really nice.
Also, CVTs are totally fine for regular cars.

I would love a 2015. Sadly, one is not in my price range.
![]() 11/16/2014 at 22:19 |

Well, if it's a good deal go for it. They're automotive swiss army knives.

I'm thinking that I can get a deal since my grandfather is friends with the general manager.
